Squamish Lil'Wat Cultural Center
Whistler, British ColumbiaA First Nations Cultural Showcase With Hidden Multifunctional Abilities
A sense of natural balance defines this impressive First Nations Cultural Center. In this complex space, freestanding graphic panels are angled and curved in several opposing directions. While evoking a feeling of natural flow and unity with surrounding elements, this type of component can be challenging to fabricate with a graceful, seamless appearance.
In addition, unlike most conventional museum displays and exhibits, this is a multifunctional space. It is a traveling exhibit, but of a unique kind – it travels upward. Unseen to the everyday visitor, the entire assemblage was fabricated using ultralight materials and can hoist to the ceiling like a theatre backdrop, converting the space into a conference area.
As with all Native Cultural Center Exhibits, sensitivity and respect for all artifacts was essential. In all cases, the greatest care was taken, both in handling and with respect to their cultural importance.
