Robson Square Digital Gateway Interactive Video Wall
Interactive Video Wall Installation
For the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games, 3DS was asked to build an interactive video wall that ranks as one of the world’s largest. The wall was a central feature of Robson Square’s 2010 Commerce Centre. This digital corridor is a 100-foot long interactive video wall installation in the centre’s BC Showcase, telling the story of British Columbia industry to visitors from all over the world. Over 2,500 square feet of space, the BC Showcase proudly displays local BC wood, floor to ceiling.
This is a fully interactive digital corridor and an immersive experience, on a level not commonly seen. The show consists of seventeen animated stories, with motion effects triggered by viewers’ own actions. Their movements are tracked in detail by no less than 45 overhead infrared sensors and the result is a deeply enhanced sense of involvement in the stories.
Switch Interactive led the project and came to 3DS for the build & installation. This digital corridor was a collaboration between several Vancouver companies, with Sensor technology supplied by Tangible Interaction, animated images handled by Myron Campbell and original music by Film & Television Composer, Terry Frewer.
Iain Black, BC’s Minister of Small Business, explains that the project is “designed to show off our province to the world”, adding that the project made “a huge impression on our Olympic guests”. Switch Creative Director, Catherine Winckler comments, “it’s rare to be given the opportunity to work on an interactive installation of this scope and size”.
