AN INTERACTIVE HOCKEY SHOWCASE THAT HAS MORE IN COMMON WITH A NINE INCH NAILS TOUR THAN YOU MIGHT THINK: The Vancouver Canucks “Hall Of Heroes” is defined by many things, notably its dramatic and innovative use of light. This interactive sports exhibit is aglow from floor to ceiling with lighting-related ingenuity. The project began with content developed by Montréal lighting effects firm, Moment Factory, veteran of clients like Fiat, Disney and Nine Inch Nails. Vancouver’s Karo was called in to design the environment itself and 3DS was the natural choice for building and installation of this showcase.
The exhibit itself is a permanent themed attraction in Rogers Arena, Vancouver’s largest stadium and home of the Vancouver Canucks. It looks back over the illustrious lives and careers of the team’s three greatest players, Trevor Linden, Stan Smyl and Marcus Naslund; it looks forward in its presentation of their stories, with interactive display technology implemented on a scale not seen in sports exhibits of the past. A towering 7-foot HD display dominates the entry point, while an array of smaller interactive stations provide visitors access to a wealth of rich biographical material. The futuristic aspects are balanced by numerous actual artifacts, lovingly preserved and presented. A standout feature is Trevor Linden’s actual locker & change area, configured exactly as it was – with the addition of yet more interactive screens. Even the floor looks for all the world like a true NHL hockey rink, complete with scuffs & scratches. The Canucks plan to expand the “Hall Of Heroes” over time, with the next phase set to open in Spring, 2011. This exhibit is only the beginning.
